About the Ingredients:

Detoxification Support:

Spirulina is free-floating microalgae found in alkaline bodies of water. Its long history of use and high nutritional value has brought its attention to research. Spirulina is a noteworthy source of antioxidants that has shown to increase glutathione levels while reducing markers of oxidative stress (including thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances). Spirulina can also increase fat oxidation (the use of fat for energy), which results in increases in energy levels during exercise.

Chlorella is a nutritious species of freshwater green algae with a long history of consumption in Japan. In synergism with soluble fibers, Fibersol®-2 and fructooligosaccharides, as key eliminators of heavy metals and other toxins in the GI tract, fiber-rich chlorella is recognized for its toxin-binding and elimination properties. Working in synergism with the antioxidant in spirulina, chlorella helps elongate the lifespan of cells, protecting the cell from oxidative stress and damage. Oxidative stress and, subsequent, damage accelerate aging and increase susceptibility to illness. Chlorella consumption has also shown to provide a number of health benefits on blood pressure and glucose levels.

In addition to working with the antioxidant effects of spirulina, chlorella amplifies the fat-burning properties of spirulina. Long-term supplementation with chlorella has shown to influence gene expression with genes involved in fat metabolism and insulin signaling pathways. The shift to greater fat metabolism with the hypoglycemic properties of chlorella have resulted in reduced body fat.

Milk Thistle, derived from the Silybium marianum plant, has been examined in research for its anticancer, antidiabetic, and cardioprotective effects. Acknowledged as one of the most well-researched plants in the treatment of liver disease, milk thistle acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation. This, in turn, treats and protects liver cells that could be negatively affected by regular consumption of tylenol and alcohol as well as by general oxidative stress. A collection of studies have found milk thistle supplementation to be safe and well tolerated. [28]

Digestive Support:

Fibersol®-2 is a digestion-resistant prebiotic that is a soluble and fermentable fiber. Fibersol®-2 increases satiety hormones plasma peptide YY and glucagon-like peptide-1 as well as insulin sensitivity. This results in greater appetite control and reduced caloric intake throughout the day for successful weight loss.

Prebiotic intake promotes beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract and enhances the immune system. Increasing fiber intake has also shown to reduce the risk of a number of diseases and health conditions including obesity. Fiber intake improves bowel movement function and comfort. Regular bowel movements help eliminate unwanted toxins and waste from the digestive tract for optimal health.

Phytonutrient Support:

Cranberries contain antioxidants including high levels of vitamin C, flavonoids, anthocyanidins, and catechins. Cranberry extract is well known for its treatment effects on urinary tract infections (UTI). One mechanism of action that makes cranberry successful is its ability to prevent bacteria attaching to the lining of the urinary tract including the bladder. If bacteria cannot attach itself to the tissue lining of the urinary tract, it cannot infect and cause a UTI. Cranberry extract has also been recognized for its cholesterol-lowering and gastroprotective effects attributed by its antioxidant properties.

Complementing the antioxidant properties of cranberry, red raspberry extract is rich in polyphenols and has been recognized in research for its anti-inflammatory properties. Red raspberry protects cell integrity and immune function by increasing glutathione levels. Red raspberry promote endothelial function, translating to optimal blood flow for greater energy levels, blood pressure regulation, and heart health.

Grape seed extract possess noteworthy antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. This translates to a number of benefits including optimized immune system defenses, blood flow, organ health, and joint functionality and health.

Blueberry promotes nitric oxide synthesis, which translates to increased blood flow. Increased blood flow enhances overall health with added benefits on heart health, blood pressure, eye health, and energy levels. Complementing the antioxidant properties of blueberry, bilberry contains anthocyanins and enhances the benefits blueberry has to offer on brain and eye health.

Immune System Support:

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides occurring in the bran of cereal grains (barley and oats). Beta-glucans increase immune defenses by enhancing macrophages and natural killer cell function. Beta-glucans also possess anti-cancer properties with protection against genotoxic carcinogens. Beta-glucans delays stomach emptying, resulting in dietary glucose absorbed more gradually with less increases in glucose. This decreases food intake with enhanced appetite control and reduces the risk of diabetes.

What Research is Saying:

Research has shown four weeks of spirulina intake to significantly improve exercise performance, increasing time to fatigue. Spirulina demonstrated noteworthy antioxidant effects, increasing glutathione levels while reducing markers of oxidative stress (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances). [1] Additional research has demonstrated spirulina intake to significantly increase antioxidant status. [2]

Chlorella has been recognized in research for its antioxidant properties. [3] Long-term intake of chlorella has also shown to reduce high blood pressure, lower serum cholesterol levels, accelerate wound healing, and enhance immune functions. [4] Research has shown chlorella to elicit hypoglycemic effects with increases in fat metabolism among healthy, non-diabetic subjects. These findings resulted in noteworthy reductions in body fat percentage, serum total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose levels. [5]

Fibersol®-2 is a digestion-resistant prebiotic that is a soluble and fermentable fiber. One study found Fibersol®-2 supplementation to help control appetite as subjects experienced delayed hunger and increased satiety with significantly increased satiety hormones, plasma peptide YY and glucagon-like peptide-1. [6] Increased appetite control can substantially aid weight loss over time. Fiber intake is inversely associated with body weight and body fat as fiber effectively increases satiety and reduces overall caloric intake. [7] Demonstrating protective effects against colorectal cancer, Fibersol®-2 has demonstrated supplementation tolerability among men and women. [8] [9]

Increasing fiber intake has shown to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, obesity, and gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. gastroesophageal reflux disease, duodenal ulcer, diverticulitis, constipation, and hemorrhoids). Prebiotic fiber intake is also associated with improved immune function. [10] Research has also observed daily soluble fiber intake to improve insulin sensitivity. [11] [12] A number of studies support the consumption of fiber to improve bowel movement frequency and consistency. [11]

Known for its efficacy in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs), cranberry extract is also heart healthy, having been documented in research for its LDL cholesterol-lowering (the “bad” cholesterol) capacity. [13] [14] [15] Cranberries are a great source of phytochemicals that have also been examined for their anti-cancer and gastroprotective (protecting components of the stomach) activity. [16] [17]

Beta-glucans have demonstrated their efficacy for lowering cholesterol levels. Several studies have also shown oat beta-glucans to blunt the glycemic and insulin response following food consumption. Beta-1,3-glucans improve the body's immune system defense against foreign invaders by enhancing the ability of macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells to respond to and combat various threats such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. [18]

Red raspberry extract is rich in polyphenols and has been recognized in research for its anti-inflammatory properties. Research has observed the red raspberry phenolic compounds to promote endothelial function and health, translating to optimal blood flow for heart health and general health. [19]

Research has demonstrated the antioxidant benefits of grape seed extract on the immune system as well as its anti-inflammatory properties among human subjects. [20] Additional research has observed short term grape seed extract to increase antioxidant status among young volunteers, including smokers whose immune systems are inhibited. [21] [22] Additional research has observed the grape seed extract to protect against collagen degradation, which could extend to providing benefit against arthritis and inflammatory conditions. [23]

Long-term consumption of blueberry has demonstrated neuroprotective effects with benefits on cognitive function. [24] Additional research has shown long-term blueberry consumption to provide positive effects on blood flow (promoting nitric oxide synthesis), blood pressure, and eye health. [25] [26] The anthocyanins in bilberry complement that of blueberry, demonstrating neuroprotective effects and benefits on eye health. [27]
