Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid that serves a precursor for nitric oxide (NO). Boosting nitric oxide levels leads to increased vasodilation, which equals enhanced blood flow. Arginine has shown to increase basal growth hormone secretion by inhibiting endogenous somatostatin release. Exercises promotes increases in growth hormone, however, arginine consumption prior to exercise can enhance GH secretions even greater than exercise alone. Research has observed noteworthy increases in muscle strength and size with one gram of arginine combined with one gram of ornithine.
