The Relationship Between Mental Health and Physical Health

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition of full physical, mental and emotional well-being and not just the absence of sickness and disease. Many different definitions have been used over the years. For some it is a state of good health; for others it is something less than that. Still others believe that good health is capable of maintaining itself, without any effort on the part of the person. Whatever definition you choose to use, it is important to know what it means to have good health.

Good health is achieved through a balanced combination of diet and physical activity, proper stress management, and a reduction in the risks of chronic diseases. There are many aspects to good health, including but not limited to a healthy weight, a low incidence of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and osteoporosis, a low intake of tobacco and alcohol consumption, a low occurrence of stress, and a high level of social support. Mental health includes your ability to live well with what you experience in your daily life, as well as your ability to cope with traumatic events and stressful situations. Stress affects all areas of our lives, mentally as well as physically. Mental disorders include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and several other types of mental health conditions.

The concepts of physical and mental health science are interrelated, even though they are two separate fields of study. In a physical way, good health involves your ability to maintain your body’s health by keeping it in shape. Your body can be in good health if you take care of it properly, eat right, and avoid certain diseases. It is also important that you get enough rest and exercise regularly. In a mental way, good health is related to your attitude, which is determined by the strength of your will and the quality of your values. By making your values and your will strong, you can become successful and happy in your life, and you will enjoy all the experiences that life has to offer you.
