In the past, a computer or video game console was the only way to experience all the benefits and advantages of playing computer or video games. Today, we have dozens of different types of computer and video games. Some of these video games are available for free online or at a local store, while others require a monthly subscription to a gaming service.

One type of video games that has exploded in popularity is World of Warcraft. Although it originated in the world of strategy and war games, it quickly grew into a multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) with millions of players and thousands of players at any given time. While early MMORPGs were text-based, World of Warcraft now includes rich, 3D graphics with amazing detail and realistic physics that make World of Warcraft’s world and environment realistic and believable.

There are other types of online gaming devices that are growing in popularity as well. Game cubes, PSP machines, and even cell phones with gaming capabilities have allowed millions of children to escape the daily grind of school and play a fun and safe game against friends and family. These newer consoles allow for a number of features that weren’t even available in previous generations of consoles, including online gaming, internet streaming, video camera functionality and a large variety of games that can be downloaded for free from a variety of websites on the internet. Although some parents may be concerned about the growing popularity of video gaming and the potential influences it will have on children, recent studies show that children play regularly and are actually more interactive than they were ten years ago. Many younger children are spending more time playing games than watching television. With the increasing options and the ever-changing gaming technology, it seems likely that the future of gaming will continue to expand and grow for several years to come.
