Gaming is the general term used to describe a number of different computer games, although they are grouped into genres by the people who play them. Action and adventure games are mostly played on dedicated console type machines; action and simulation games are played on personal computers and the like; sports games are usually played on personal computers that are equipped with game controllers. A game hobbyist can spend her or his life’s fortune building the ultimate computer game, complete with every possible detail and interactivity possible. In some cases, the game developer(s) provide an interface for the game, while in other cases, the gamer does all the programming and uses the game interface to control the game.
Online gaming is growing increasingly popular among a number of different age groups. Most recently, teenage girls have been playing online games such as “World of Warcraft” and “Second Life”, which are largely designed for the female population. These online games involve complex planning and strategy, and often require the player to use numerous computer systems in order to be successful. Some of these games are available free of charge while others are sold at a very high price. The popularity of online gaming is increasing at a rapid pace, and experts are predicting an increase in online gaming over the next several years.
Gaming has had a rather interesting history since its inception. Early efforts to create a game console that could accept multiple connections were thwarted by the failure of the Fairies of Loathing game console, which was programmed by Nintendo. However, a group of highly skilled coders worked out a way to create what is now known as the Game Boy, which was essentially a handheld game console. Eventually, games involving flash software were developed for game consoles such as the Sony PlayStation. With the rise of massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPGs, came an increased interest by the public in this type of gaming. Currently, more MMORPGs are being released for both PC and game consoles.
