Health Problems and Well-Being
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition that “is not only the absence of illness and infirmity but the ability to cope with bodily processes.” A number of definitions have also been used over the years for various purposes. In common usage, however, health is typically understood to mean well being with the associated ability to perform activities of daily living with a minimum level of health risk. While healthy people can lead productive lives with few difficulties, unhealthy individuals are typically unable to lead healthy lives and experience significant health problems.
Mental health is related to general wellness, but it also includes a person’s capacity for dealing with stress, anxiety, frustration, and pain. Mental health issues are also related to quality of life, which is described as having an optimal level of satisfaction with your physical, mental, social, and emotional health and relationships. People who are happy with their lives have high levels of well-being, but those who are unhappy live with significant mental health issues including stress, depression, and anxiety. Other mental health issues that may be indicators of other underlying conditions include eating disorders, substance abuse, or alcoholism.
The quality of life improvements achieved by people when they have identified and eliminated the sources of stress and frustration that adversely affect their health status. This improvement in lifestyle yields a variety of outcomes that are both physical and mental. Physical health improves through reduction of weight and increased muscle mass. Mental health improves through a decreased risk of mental diseases, such as depression and anxiety. Both physical and mental health conditions can be effectively combated through a well-structured health maintenance program, which focuses on promoting good health through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and participation in stress management activities.
