Synonyms For Sports

Sports refer to any physical game whereby one or more participants engage in a physically active activity. Such an activity may be a game such as American football, basketball, baseball, soccer, or even wrestling; a competition such as horse racing; or a means of recreation, such as golf, surfing, swimming, etc. A meeting of two people where they engage in a sport is called a game, and an activity performed with a group of people for the purpose of leisure, fitness, instruction or otherwise.

Sports are categorized into two major divisions, namely physical and mental sports. Sports that involve physical activities, such as athletics, involve two or more different muscles and joints. Those that do not require muscles and joints, such as games such as bingo, fishing, billiards, etc., do not necessarily involve both physical and mental activities. Sports are categorized according to the activity engaged in; for example, motor skills training is considered to be a type of sport, whereas skiing, rowing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, hockey, swimming and cycling are considering non-sport activities. Those engaged in intellectual sports have been known to use their minds in non-sport activities as well.

The primary objective of sports is physical activity; therefore, those involved in sports must be in good overall health. Those involved in athletic endeavors must be in good body condition. The ability to endure long periods of physical exertion, endurance, and the ability to recover quickly from such exertion form the basis of the sport of choice. Some sports actually develop motor skills, such as basketball, tennis, track and field, and football. These motor skills are developed through practice and can be used on the court or field.
